My clients believe their relationship happiness is at least as important as any of these things listed above.
Benefits to consider about not using insurance and paying out-of-pocket:
- No need to be labeled. Neither you and your partner need a mental health diagnosis in order to get help, which is necessary when insurance pays for therapy.
- You are in control. Insurance companies are not involved in deciding your care such as how many sessions, how often, what diagnoses qualify for what kind of care, etc. Instead, your treatment is catered completely to you and your needs.
- Your information stays private. Struggles, challenges, and other details about your private life remain outside of the insurance records.
- Session length catered to couples. My typical couples sessions are 75 minutes, which allows time to attend to each partner and the relationship as a whole. Typical individual client sessions are the standard 50 minutes.
- You can start therapy more quickly. These days it is not uncommon for therapists who take insurance to have long waitlists. Since my clients are in charge of their therapy, they commit to working for a period of time and then stop when they are feeling done. (Since they see me as a resource, they come back when new challenges arise.) I usually have openings within 4-6 weeks, and I typically do not take on new clients in December or January.
- Use your HSA or FSA. I can provide invoices which you can submit for reimbursement.
- ALSO: If you are thinking of using insurance (and not work with me), you may wish to check with your insurance company since couples therapy is often not a covered benefit in Wisconsin.
